VelvetSpeak App Guide
Beginner-friendly guide that matches the current VelvetSpeak app UI.
Label updates (old -> new): Conversation Mode -> Output Format, Assist Level / Live Coaching -> Help, Persona / Style -> Tone.
Quick Start: 60 seconds to first win
- Open the app.
- Tap Pick a Pack (shown as Quick Start Packs).
- Tap a Pack to see a preview.
- Tap Start.
Packs set defaults for the primary controls, but you can override any of them at any time.
The 4 Primary Controls (always visible)
These controls stay on the home screen so you can adjust them quickly, even mid-conversation.
Output Format
Choose how suggestions are formatted on the glasses HUD.
Cue Cards
Supporting text: 2-3 short lines you can say next.
- What it does: 2-3 short lines you can say next.
- When to use: You want glanceable prompts and minimal reading.
- What you will see on glasses: Compact lines with a clear next phrase.
Preview example: They said: "I love hiking" | Say: "That sounds fun - what got you into it?"
One-Liner
Supporting text: One punchy line.
- What it does: One punchy line.
- When to use: You want fast, witty, or light-touch lines.
- What you will see on glasses: A single short line, usually one page.
Preview example: Say: "So you are the one with all the good stories."
Coach
Supporting text: 1 line to say + 1 quick tip.
- What it does: One line to say plus one quick tip.
- When to use: You want help with both wording and a coaching cue.
- What you will see on glasses: A short line plus a brief tip line.
Preview example: Say: "I get that." | Tip: Ask a follow-up question.
Script
Supporting text: Teleprompter chunks for longer delivery.
- What it does: Teleprompter chunks for longer delivery.
- When to use: Interviews or any moment where you need a structured answer.
- What you will see on glasses: Chunked lines that can span multiple pages.
Preview example: Chunk 1: "In my last role..." | Chunk 2: "What I learned was..."
Tone
Choose the voice style of suggestions. Output Format stays the same, but word choice changes.
Warm
- What it does: Friendly, supportive wording.
- When to use: Dates, reconnecting, or any gentle conversation.
- What you will see on glasses: Soft, encouraging phrasing in your chosen format.
Confident
- What it does: Direct, grounded wording.
- When to use: Networking, interviews, or when you want clarity and authority.
- What you will see on glasses: Clear, assertive phrasing in your chosen format.
Witty
- What it does: Playful, clever wording.
- When to use: Social moments where humor helps break the ice.
- What you will see on glasses: Light, punchy phrasing in your chosen format.
Adaptive
- What it does: Adjusts tone based on context and topic.
- When to use: You want the app to choose the best tone automatically.
- What you will see on glasses: Tone shifts while the format stays the same.
Help
Choose how much guidance appears in each suggestion.
Fast
- What it does: Minimal guidance and shorter prompts.
- When to use: You want light nudges and fast reading.
- What you will see on glasses: Short, often single-page suggestions.
Standard
- What it does: Balanced guidance for most conversations.
- When to use: You want a reliable default without extra detail.
- What you will see on glasses: Clear suggestions, usually 1-2 pages.
Deep
- What it does: More coaching detail and richer guidance.
- When to use: Practice, difficult topics, or interview prep.
- What you will see on glasses: Longer suggestions that may span multiple pages.
Smart Companion
Smart Companion adds proactive nudges alongside your main suggestions.
Off
- What it does: Pauses proactive nudges.
- When to use: You want only main suggestions.
- What you will see on glasses: Only your main suggestion format.
On
- What it does: Shows occasional nudges and tips.
- When to use: You want extra guidance in the background.
- What you will see on glasses: Short nudges or reminders in between main suggestions.
Frequency settings live in Settings > Advanced Conversation > Guidance & Nudges (Trigger Mode and Interval).
Preview-first (important)
- What it does: Tapping a setting, Pack, or Support Module shows a 1-3 page preview of HUD output.
- When to use: Any time you are unsure what a setting will do before you go live.
- What you will see on glasses: The same formatting used in live sessions, rendered deterministically (no LLM calls in settings screens).
Packs (Roadmap A)
Packs set defaults for Output Format, Tone, Help, and Smart Companion. You can override any of those controls after you pick a Pack.
Date Night (Connection)
- What it does: Warm, genuine flow for building connection.
- When to use: First dates or any warm, getting-to-know-you moment.
- What you will see on glasses: Coach format with short lines and tips.
Recommended modules: Thread Anchor
Date Night (Flirty & Bold - Advanced)
- What it does: Opt-in rizz toolkit with intensity levels.
- When to use: You want playful, bolder energy (advanced).
- What you will see on glasses: One-Liner format with punchy lines.
Recommended modules: Short Output
Quick Wit
- What it does: Punchy lines and fun for quick moments.
- When to use: Social events or quick banter.
- What you will see on glasses: One-Liner format, usually one page.
Recommended modules: None
Party / Networking
- What it does: Openers, follow-ups, and keep it moving.
- When to use: Meeting new people or making a strong first impression.
- What you will see on glasses: Coach format with clear follow-ups.
Recommended modules: Thread Anchor, Freeze Rescue
CC Only
- What it does: Captions for loud environments; easy demo.
- When to use: Loud spaces or when you only want captions.
- What you will see on glasses: Cue Cards format with short caption lines.
Recommended modules: None
Interview (Ace Assist Lite)
- What it does: Structured, confident answers (Script format).
- When to use: Interviews or structured Q and A.
- What you will see on glasses: Script chunks that can span pages.
Recommended modules: Thread Anchor
Difficult Conversation
- What it does: Calm phrasing with Coach format.
- When to use: Sensitive topics or emotionally charged talks.
- What you will see on glasses: Coach format with steady, calm phrasing.
Recommended modules: Blanking Rescue, Thread Anchor
Support Modules (stackable behavior modifiers)
Modules stack with any Pack. The app recommends 0-2 by default; Advanced mode lets you add more.
Freeze Rescue
- What it does: Auto line when you go quiet for a few seconds.
- When to use: You freeze or pause often in live conversation.
- What you will see on glasses: A quick rescue line after a 3-4 second silence.
Blanking Rescue
- What it does: Three options when you blank out mid-sentence.
- When to use: You lose your train of thought and want easy options.
- What you will see on glasses: Three short choices (buy-time, reflect, follow-up).
Thread Anchor
- What it does: Adds a short recap of what they just said.
- When to use: You want a quick memory jog of the last point.
- What you will see on glasses: A "They said:" line (7-10 words) at the top.
Short Output
- What it does: Caps suggestions to 1-2 pages.
- When to use: You want shorter reads or a faster pace.
- What you will see on glasses: Shorter suggestions regardless of other settings.
Low Battery (Still Engaged)
- What it does: Simple, present lines with a gentle follow-up.
- When to use: You are low energy but still want to stay engaged.
- What you will see on glasses: Easy-to-deliver reflect plus question patterns.
Personal Vault
- What it does: Your saved lines surface on trigger topics.
- When to use: You want ready responses for awkward or personal topics.
- What you will see on glasses: Your saved line appears when a trigger is detected.
Practice Mode v1
Practice Mode lets you rehearse with a friendly AI partner before you go live. It uses the same coaching pipeline and ends with a debrief.
First Date
- What it does: Practice a friendly first-date opener and follow-ups.
- When to use: You want warm, curious practice before a date.
- What you will see on glasses: Live-style suggestions in your chosen format.
Networking
- What it does: Practice a quick networking exchange with a clear ask.
- When to use: You are preparing for events or introductions.
- What you will see on glasses: Short, structured suggestions in your chosen format.
Interview
- What it does: Practice a first-round interview opener and follow-ups.
- When to use: You want structured, confident practice.
- What you will see on glasses: Script or Coach style suggestions based on your settings.
Vault curveballs: If you have Personal Vault entries, you can add a curveball topic to practice that response.
Advanced / Device / Diagnostics
Advanced (Settings > Advanced Conversation)
- What it does: Lets you fine-tune timing and behavior (Guidance & Nudges, Support Modules, Advanced Modes).
- When to use: You want to adjust Smart Companion frequency or switch suggestion timing.
- What you will see on glasses: More or fewer nudges, and different timing for suggestions.
Key items: Trigger Mode (Key Moments or Timed), Interval (Every 2, 3, or 5 minutes), Suggestion Mode (Smart Coach, Silence Detection, Flow Mode), Allow Playful.
Device (Settings > Device & HUD)
- What it does: Controls HUD display, brightness, mic source, calibration, and background service.
- When to use: Any time the HUD feels too bright, too long, or the mic source is wrong.
- What you will see on glasses: Immediate changes to brightness, page length, and HUD status lines.
Key items: Reply Length (HUD Pages), Show Activity, Auto Brightness / Manual Brightness, Ring / Button Control, Watch Remote, Calibration Hub, Verification Threshold, Microphone Source, Background Service, Battery Optimization.
Diagnostics
- What it does: Unlocks backend checks, logs, and system diagnostics.
- When to use: Only when troubleshooting with support or debugging issues.
- What you will see on glasses: Mostly phone-side tools; the HUD may show status toasts.
Unlock: Settings > About & Feedback > tap Build info 7 times, then open Diagnostics.
Troubleshooting
No suggestions
- Confirm the session is started and the HUD is connected.
- Check Microphone Source is correct (Phone Microphone or G1 Glasses Microphone).
- Set Help to Standard or Deep and turn Smart Companion On.
Suggestions too long
- Enable Short Output module.
- Set Help to Fast or Standard.
- Lower Reply Length (HUD Pages) in Device & HUD.
Freezing or blanking
- Turn on Freeze Rescue and Blanking Rescue.
- Use Thread Anchor if you need a quick recap.
- Try Help = Standard for steady coaching.
Loud environment
- Use the CC Only Pack.
- Switch to Cue Cards Output Format.
- Keep Short Output on for readability.
App stops when screen locks
- Enable Background Service in Device & HUD.
- Turn on Auto-Start on Boot.
- Disable Battery Optimization for VelvetSpeak.
Quick reference checklist
- Pick a Pack and preview it before you start.
- Set Output Format, Tone, Help, and Smart Companion.
- Enable Support Modules you want (0-2 recommended).
- Check Reply Length and Brightness in Device & HUD.
- Use Practice Mode if you want a warm-up.
